by
Annette Harper B.
Making candles is a very good way to while the time. One aspect about making unique candles is that the candle making containers you use have to be unique. The bonus is that they are all over the place you just have to open your eyes to the possibilities.
Well of course there are the usual suspects that are glass containers. These are quite nifty but you cannot pick any glass that is too brittle. It is good to go with hardy glass that will withstand the hot wax otherwise it will crack and leave a horribly hot mess all over your workstation. Tempered glass is a good choice. The temptation is to pick old jam jars and such while these are good to train yourself with they do not really stand out do they?
However, you can get creative with these old jars by simply decorating them in any way that you choose to. It might be a good idea to rummage around for oddly shaped jars that you might still have in the attic. The decorations on the jars however have to be heat resistant as the flame flickers down. Strips of raffia glued to the jar might make a good motif as would sand or glitter poured over the glue-coated jar.
Some of the most unique containers that have been produced are ceramics; Potters have come up with some of the most amazing containers ever. Another option is antique glassware, a trip through thrift shops and flea markets in the area might yield some interesting candle making containers. But on this jaunts one should not really be looking for anything in particular and it is quite possible to stumble onto a really unique container.
Apart from these traditional candle containers, it is also possible to find other kind of containers that would look just lovely as candles. Of course, you want to make sure that they are non-flammable. Coconut shells and some seashells that are large enough could make good candles as would the classic pumpkin face candle come Halloween.
Once you have found the ideal candle container you are all set to get on with the candle making process which is not that tricky. First you have to make sure that your container of choice is well prepared. That means depending on the type of material you might want to make all the embellishments before in general unless it involves some kind of etching it is best to decorate after to make sure the hot wax does not deface it.
It is critical to ensure that the container is clean and dry. Stick one of the wicks to the bottom of your chosen container making sure that you have at least six inches of wick and clear off the top of the containers mouth. Wrap this around a pencil and place the pencil across the mouth of the container making sure the wick is straight. Time to pour in the molten wax and wait for it to set
The minute they set your candle making containers turn into candles and you are good to go.
